When Marsh released our 2008 Communications, Media and Technology Risk Benchmark Report, we were witnessing the beginning of unprecedented volatility in the global financial markets. We expected that in 2009, the communications sector would see a slowdown in capital expenditure spending. Highly leveraged media companies would face significant financial challenges, and both the new media and technology sectors would see significant slowdown in their growth and increasing pressure on their margins. To no surprise, this has certainly proven to be the case.
Our clients' revenues and margins decreased, and so did insurance budgets. As capital and cash positions took a hit, or as businesses restructured, risk profiles and risk tolerance changed. In response, our communications, media, and technology (CMT) clients across the board were diligent in taking a fresh look at the types and amount of risk they should be retaining versus transferring.
To assist clients in understanding their risks, Marsh collects and maintains extensive benchmark data for a wide variety of industries and risks. Our information is collected, aggregated, and analyzed by our industry and risk practice experts across the country.
Marsh's Communications, Media, and Technology Practice has produced its 2009 annual benchmark study, which compares the risk management and insurance programs of more than 750 buyers of insurance products in the communications, media, and technology industry in the United States, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. This report, our third Communications, Media and Technology benchmark report to date, combines our most current benchmarking data into a single and uniform document focused on the communications, media, and technology industry.
Benchmarking is an extremely valuable tool that helps us validate insurance-program design, renewal strategies, and pricing targets to achieve positive results for our clients. Marsh's Communications, Media, and Technology Risk Benchmark Report is intended to be a supplemental resource to help our clients make more informed decisions about their insurance programs. The report also outlines some of the recent trends in the global insurance market for communications, media, and technology and provides information on all major lines of coverage.
