Our Country
Almost five centuries as a Portuguese colony came to a close with independence in 1975.

Large-scale emigration by Portuguese settlers, economic dependence on South Africa, a severe drought and a prolonged civil war hindered the country's development. The ruling party (Freelimo) formally abandoned Marxism in 1989 and a new Constitution the following year provided for multi-party elections and a free market economy. A United Nations-negotiated peace agreement with rebel forces ended the fighting in 1992.

The Republic of Mozambique is situated in south-eastern Africa, bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. The capital city is Maputo, formerly known as Lourenço Marques.

Our Regulators
We are regulated by the ISSM (Instituto Superior de Seguros de Moçambique) which is under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance, which oversees and monitors the insurance industry. The main legislation applicable to our insurance industry is Decree 1/2010 of 1 December 2010 and Decree Law No 30/2011 of 11 August 2011.
