Our Country
South Africa is a democratic federal state comprising a national government and nine provincial governments. The legal system is based on Roman Dutch law and on our 1996 modern Constitution. Our population is around 60 million and our currency is the Rand. The nine provinces are Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumulanga, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Free State, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Northern Cape. The Administrative capital is Pretoria in Gauteng.

Our Local Markets
There are six reinsurers, about twenty mainstream insurers and about sixty mainstream underwriting managers who act as specialist agents for their principal insurers. There is a strong broker presence with Marsh Africa being among the largest short-term broking houses in South Africa.
Our Regulators
We are regulated by the Financial Services Board under the Ministry of Finance. The main statutes applicable to the market are The Short & Long-Term Insurance Acts of 1998 (Insurers) and the Financial Advisory & Intermediary Services Act 2002 (Intermediaries).
