In 2002, the then Marsh South Africa (Pty) Ltd established an empowerment venture in partnership with a BEE consortium. At the time, thetook the word “Vikela”, Zulu for “Protection”, into the newly formed venture to form Vikela Marsh (Pty) Ltd. Subsequently in 2006, when both companies were merged, this word was retained in the restructured Marsh Vikela (Pty) Ltd.

As a prominent insurance broker and risk advisor, and of equal importance, a good corporate citizen that understands local corporate success is connected to societal empowerment and growth, Marsh are committed to the social and commercial imperatives of
transformation in South Africa. The company achieved the status of Level Four Contributor on their Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment rating and continually seek to improve on this rating.

To better align the local business with the global footprint, the South African Board took a decision to change the locally registered operating name to Marsh (Pty) Ltd. This change came into effect immediately following the announcement.

Brian went on to say, "Nothing else changes, our focus on excellence in client service delivery, the core of our business, continues uninterrupted."
